I realized that I haven’t posted much about Chance the past couple of weeks. Well. he has been great. We have been doing a lot of technical work and trot jumps lately, and changed bits yesterday. He got really wild last week for some reason. Maybe he thought that with the slight drop in temperatures that he had better gear up for winter! Luckily, he has been back to his laid-back, summer self this week.
All of the technical work has helped to finally get his booty back in shape. As many of you know, he lost a lot of weight and muscle last winter – for reasons still unknown. He went through testing for EPM, Cushing’s, and more yet the vet could not find anything wrong. So, since he did not appear to be in any discomfort, we decided to simply keep an eye on him and feed him more. Once the spring grass arrived, he began to put weight back on and his coat started looking better. However, his booty was still not where it needed to be, but just look at him now!
I actually wonder if perhaps he could have had EPM, or something similiar, and his body healed on its own. I am just glad he getting his muscle back.
Though the trot jumps have helped our jumping, he has still been very heavy through the bridle. Like pulling me forward heavy! I have used a happy mouth bit on him for the past couple of years, and I think that it is just time for a change. I am trying him in a loose ring snaffle this week, and he seems to like it. We have more connection and less resistance! He was soft and supple around the jumps today. Sometimes a small tweak can make a big difference!
Well, I hope you are all having a great, horse-filled week!
