I had an interesting moment on Chance yesterday. So, he is finally getting back to jumping again and, since he is often wild as can be after he has had time off, we have been taking things slow. Trotting and cantering tiny jumps, working over ground rails, that sort of thing. He has been good for the most part. It is just always interesting when he has had a long break. He tends to forget his manners, and completely lose his work ethic.
However, yesterday he was being so good over the little X we were jumping. There was no head tossing, no overly dramatic leaping. No spooks. We softly cantered this little jump, and softly cantered away. Then, he stepped on his hoof, nearly fell on his face, and pulled his shoe off in the process. Luckily, we did not take a tumble but I was just thinking to myself, “isn’t that just life sometimes?” At least my life! We can be going along great and then something just knocks us on our face – or maybe we even do it to ourselves. We make mistakes, fail, get hurt, or maybe things just don’t work out the way we had hoped. I think what matters though is that we get back up and keep going.
Chance and I did not keep going yesterday, since he was short a shoe! But we will get back to work this weekend! I am hoping for mild weather so he will continue to be quiet, although I do hope he pays more attention to where his feet are!
